Shri. Nitin Gadkari was emphatically chosen by the Nagpur Electorate in 2014 Loksabha elections.
Reinforcing the faith in his ability, Hon. Prime Minister Mr. Modi entrusted him the critical portfolios of Road Transport, Waterways, Highways, Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation. Later in the first cabinet expansion the departments of Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation were given to Shri. Chaudhari Birendra Singh.
Shri. Nitin Gadkari’s mantra is to live for the nation. From his humble childhood he has been imbibed with the feelings of love for the nation and Rashtrabhakti. Since, his mother, Smt. Bhanutai Gadkari, was a member of the Jan Sangha’s women wing, his household was frequented by party workers all the time. Workers of the Sangh Parivar used to meet at their place during the Emergency. It was in this environment, Nitinji’s persona started to develop.
Soon he was seen on the ABVP’s dais. There his oratory skills were seen and appreciated. New ideas and studies formed the basis of his leadership. After winning the Students Representative Elections of the Mohata Science College and G. S. Commerce Colleges in Nagpur at the age of 24 he was selected as the President of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha, Nagpur.
This also was the period of The Emergency. After the Emergency was over Nitinji was selected to lead the BJP in Nagpur, which catalyzed his journey. During the same time The Tata’s declared the closure of the Empress Mill in Nagpur. Nitinji was at the forefront to resolve the issues of the workers, and thus cementing his base as a worker’s leader. This success was soon followed by the Vidhan Sabha Elections, and Nitinji was given an opportunity from Western Nagpur along with Smt. Sumatitai Suklikar and Dr. Ramprakash Ahuja. Later on he was selected for the 1989 Graduate Constituency Elections in the Legislative Council. He faced daunting opponents in stalwarts like Prof. Haribhau Kedar and Sardar Atalbahadur Singh. Despite such towering competition, it was Nitinji who emerged victorious in the end.
Nitinji worked relentlessly to ensure BJP’s victory in Vidarbha in the 1995 Assembly Elections. As a gesture of acknowledgement the elected BJP – Sena Government selected Nitinji as a minister and gave him the responsibility of PWD.
The Mumbai – Pune Expressway which is Maharashtra's pride and a network of flyovers in Mumbai and elsewhere were all conceived, planned and executed during his reign.
In the next elections, the party found itself in the position in the main opposition and Nitinji with a new responsibility.
He was anointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council. He did justice to his new duty and unleashed a crusade against the corruption in the Government. An unfortunate situation soon unfolded in which the Farmers of Vidarbha were caught in a very unprecedented crisis. Thousands of Farmers had committed suicide. He fought for the rights of these families in the Council and gave them justice.
In 2004 he was given a new responsibility; he was made the State President of the party. "Nitin Gadkari" – this name now had a new sheen to match his persona.
Sick Sugar producing units, Power generation plants and Bio Diesel pumps were some of his new projects which he oversaw and succeeded.
In the end of 2009, he was entrusted with the prestigious post of the National President of BJP. He, then, made true his promise and worked relentlessly towards the wellbeing of the party.
After successfully handling the reins of the party for 4 years he handed them over to another titan of a leader, Shri. Rajnath Singh.
Apart from being a successful businessman Shri Nitin Gadkari is now an MP from Nagpur and a minister in the current Government after winning the 2014 Loksabha Elections. By comfortably accepting his role he is performing his duty with utmost dedication.
