Shri. Nitin Gadkari is the Cabinet Minister in Government of India since May 2014. He holds portfolios of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping. Shri. Nitin Gadkari was elected to Lok Sabha from Nagpur constituency in May 2014 general elections. Earlier, he was National President of BJP from 2009 till January 2013. Initially, as he was inducted into the Cabinet of Ministers by the Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi, Gadkari was given charge of Road Transport, Shipping, Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation. After the reshuffle and expansion of the ministry, in November 2014, departments of Rural Development, Drinking Water and Sanitation were entrusted with Shri. Chaudhary Birender Singh, while the departments of Road Transport with Highways and Shipping were retained with Shri. Nitin Gadkari.
Shri. Nitin Gadkari has always cherished Nationalism as his inspiration and nurtured the sentiments to uplift the down trodden. Born in a middleclass family, Nitin Gadkari was brought up with values of cultural nationalism. His mother, Mrs. Bhanutai Gadkari, was an activist of Women’s Cell of Jansangh. Political meetings, therefore, were always held at his home, Gadkari Wada, in Nagpur. Meetings of peripheral organizations of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) also held their meetings at Gadkari Wada, during the years of internal emergency proclaimed by the then Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1975. Nitin Gadkari’s personality shaped in such environs. Soon he was seen on the platforms of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and an eloquent Nitin Gadkari earned appreciation and attention there too.
His leadership qualities were being shaped through innovative thoughts and studies. He was appointed as the president of Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Nagpur City at an age of 24 years as his leadership won the Students Union elections in Mohata Science College and G. S. Commerce College in Nagpur. Soon Emergency was promulgated in the country. Thereafter Nitin Gadkari was entrusted with the responsibility of Nagpur City BJP, by then he had involved in active politics.
Around this time the Tatas declared lockout in the Empress Mills at Nagpur and the mill was closed. Nitin Gadkari took up the issue of mill workers. A new leadership was born. State Assembly elections followed soon. The party announced candidature of Smt. Sumatitai Sukalikar and Dr. Ram Prakash Ahuja and also Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur West Assembly segment!
Later in 1989, he contested the State Legislative Council elections from Nagpur Graduates’ Constituency. It was a tough challenge as political heavyweights Principal Haribhau Kedar and Sardar Atalbahadur Singh were in the election ring. Nitin Gadkari, however, attained such a grip over the constituency that both his opponents were thrashed and Nitin Gadkari won the elections.
Gadkari ensured that BJP won record number of seats in the 1995 elections to the state assembly. It was but natural that Gadkari was given a berth in the Sena – BJP Cabinet of Ministers. He was entrusted with the responsibility of Public Works Department (PWD). The Mumbai – Pune Express Highway, the Pride of Maharashtra, as well as a network of 55 flyovers within Mumbai besides many other bridges and roads in the state were constructed successfully during his tenure as minister.
In the following elections, the party returned to be on the opposition benches and he was given new responsibility of being the Leader of the Opposition in the State Legislative Council. Gadkari fully utilized the opportunity and the office to attack the corrupt administration and the Congress led government. It was the year when farmers in Vidarbha faced unforeseen adversities. Thousands of farmers committed suicides. Gadkari raised the issue of farmers’ suicides in the legislature in varied ways and was instrumental in providing justice to the calamity stricken families.
Later in the year 2004 he was given another responsibility. He took over as president, Maharashtra Pradesh BJP. The person named ‘Nitin Gadkari’ soared to a new height. He also took over many new projects – including sugar mills under liquidation, power generation projects, bio-diesel pumps etc. and converted them into success story to prove his leadership qualities. After 2009 General elections. Nitin Gadkari was chosen as BJP National President, where again he proved his mettle and expanded the party base.
